Alumni MaKenna Schoolman in Regional Championship
ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 1 Grand Valley State Lakers resume NCAA Tournament action this weekend as they host the third and fourth rounds at the GVSU Soccer Field. The Lakers will host familiar foe Saginaw Valley in the Midwest Region Championship on Friday (Dec. 3) at 2:00 PM.
The Lakers are 20-1-2 on the season, the 14
th
straight fall season with at least 20 wins, having done so every fall since 2007. This year's team opened the NCAA Tournament with a 2-1 win over Cedarville in overtime, then used a barrage of goals to down Indianapolis, 5-0, in the second round and punch their ticket to a 12
th
straight Midwest Regional Championship match. The Lakers have won each of the previous 11.
GVSU beat Saginaw Valley in their only meeting of the season back in mid-October, 3-2, in a wild back-and-forth contest in University Center, Michigan. After Saginaw tied the game in the 84', the Lakers found a game-winner in the closing moments from Taylor Reid
to, at the time, stay undefeated.
The Lakers had a region-high five players named to the D2CCA All-Region teams, including four first team members. GVSU has outscored opponents 74-13 this season and lead the nation in assists and total points.
The Cardinals boast the GLIAC Freshman of the Year in Stephanie Strong, who was one of three second team All-Region honorees for the Cardinals. Olivia Argeros, who also earned GLIAC Goalkeeper of the Year, and midfielder Amy Babon also earned regional accolades. The Cardinals are 14-5-3 overall and have outscored opponents 39-18 on the season.
Argeros has 94 saves this season and an .839 save percentage, making some highlight-reel saves all season and has been playing very well in the post-season. Strong leads the Cardinals with 14 goals and two assists while Babon has scored eight times and dished five dimes.
The Central Region Championship, featuring top-seed Central Missouri and 3-seed Bemidji State will start the day with an 11 AM kickoff. The two winners will play in a National Quarterfinal on Sunday (Dec. 4) at 1 PM at the GVSU Soccer Field.
